Lebensraum

A social commentary.

The state of young people everywhere.

I always have had a secret love affair with film. The power of a film is indescribable, especially among the youth of our generation. I have to say I rarely have felt its prowess, maybe because I hardly ever watch movies. There is a reason behind it though, the choice of movies in Singaporean theaters bring forth such superficial and negative connotations. If it isn't about sex, then its about romance. Or action.

Maybe you think we live too stressed up, and these sexed up shows, or romanced dramas, and action films play pivotal rows toward more relax individuals. But the entire crux of the situation is that we are so absorbed in these meaningless dronings that we have become as superficial as they films themselves.

Which is why our generation is a superficial generation. We pay attention to how people think about us, how we look, how we behave, what we say. We become a moulding of society's standards. What other people want, we give it to them. We betray ourselves.

And all this is caught up in a vicious cycle- people imitating people who are imitating people. The ultimate decider of who to imitate is popular culture- MTV, Hollywood, a rising cult of Asian stars and who knows what else. And their lives, ladies and gentlemen, suck. They have no moral standards, and if you were to follow them, your life will have no standard as well.

These are crucial issues, and as internet and TV grow more international, a whole generation of young people will grow into delusional puppets who do nothing more then imitate.

We no longer live among humans, but among mannequins.
