Thursday Spine

From now on, BFS will be having a weekly article- entitled "Thursday Spine" every Thursday (duh,)! So please "tune in" to read what it's about. Basically, you will be reading about what I have been reading. Haha, yup, Thursday Spine is the BFS commentary about Fiction (mostly that), Non-Fiction (not a fan of this field though), Literature yada yada. Thus, 23 Feb will now mark the first entry of the Thursday Spine!

A recap to what I have read this month: (before this week)
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis
Adrian Mole and the Weapons of Mass Destruction by Sue Townsend

Have been quite down on reading until this week for Febby. Largely due to the SLI and everything out there. Part of it also to the choice of book. I have forced myself to read "The Perfect Storm" by some meterologist guy but unfortunately have failed and returned it to the Library (oops!). Might consider touching it again =)

Books I have read for the Past week:
The Big Empty by J.B. Stephens
December 2005 Issue of The Readers' Digest

What I have to say?!

Empty that's big
I have basically been intrigued by End of the World, or futuristic stories. Not really too much of Science Fiction like Star Wars or Star Trek but more of Worlds that are set in the future- facing bleakness, pollution and major issues. The first book that fired this fetish was "The Last Book in the Universe, by Rodman Philbrick" by which I read in the first quarter of last year. After reading that book, I never really found another piece of fiction that suited that dark gloomy world. Until now.

The world has been hit by a deadly virus, which killed almost half the global hoi polloi before it had even got a name. The entire American goverment had been wiped out and thus a new political party stepped in its placed without the people's consent because everyone was grieving and too sad to demand for democracy and to care for politics. Thus, America had become a military dictatorship under the new goverment. Electricity was sparse, and a laptop was a luxury. Most states were evacuated because of the virus and thus was nicknamed "The Big Empty". But was the Big Empty really empty? Had everyone been evacuated? Were everyone obeying the new goverment? Or were there rebels?

Short and sweet- just 204 pages. Would definitely be checking out Stephen's other books.

Rating: 8.5/10

Reading to Digest
Nothing much to say about this celebrated publication. Was quite late in reading- having to read it only 3 months later. Discovered some cool websites, including:

Ian's shoelace site

This site teaches you the proper ways to lace your shoes without them getting untied every 20 meters. A lot of cool shoelace stuff!

Rating: NIL

What to expect at the next Thursday Spine?
Am currently reading:

The Silver Chair by C.S. Lewis
Resurrection Blues by Mike Tanner
February Issue of The Readers' Digest
